Monique Prinsloo is a Fine Artist who lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. She completed her Masters Degree in Fine Art (MFA) at Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT), in February 2012. Her MFA thesis titled “Falling into Gentle Ruin” focussed on finding inspiration from a vast collection of found images, objects, and writing. In 2013 Monique received a grant from the National Arts Council of South Africa to attend an artist residency at NES in Iceland, where she produced a body of work titled “Iceland: Reclaim of Form and Void”.
Following her MFA, Monique has pursued a full-time career in the Film Industry as a Storyboard Artist and Creative Researcher. Monique has exhibited her work in numerous group exhibitions in and around Southern Africa, and has recently been invited to participate in the art project of the 10th Anniversary project for the Expatriate Archive Center in The Hague Netherlands, titled "Saudade" and will be attending her next Artist in Residence program at HANGAR in Lisbon Portugal, during the month of August 2017.
Currently Monique has resumed her Fine Art career full time, and continues to implement a photographic & illustrative based production in her artistic practice.
"While I have always followed a photographic based production in my artistic practice, I also strive to blur the lines between the areas of film, photography, drawing, and printmaking. My inspiration is drawn from photographic images manipulated in the dark room, the endless gestures in life drawing, the captured moment in a film still, and the surprises or challenges brought forward from found material or anonymous objects, to name but a few. Each moment an image finds its way to my collection is an enchanted discovery. And each one of these anonymous objects in my collection is charged with an ethereal quality - at once delicate and unsettling, a place of stimulation and inspiration that has many parallels with and influence on past, present, and future. It is not my intention to over-interpret. My attempt is to imaginatively manipulate and transform images, allowing them to speak for themselves, rather than divulge the didactic function of photography, drawing, printmaking or montage. In doing this, I hope to arouse the viewer's imagination, to construct imaginative accounts of what has taken place, and to some extent relive a version of my experiences in creating images from live forms; that moment I came across a found image; the dialogue prompted by these shapes and forms; the instance captured on photographic film; that gesture marked with pen on paper or in printed form."
